Home of Hockey celebrations will take place on Wednesday 11 May 2022 at Frenckell square

The City of Tampere organizes Home of Hockey celebrations at Frenckell square on Wednesday 11 May 2022 from 5–6 pm as a kickoff for the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship. The event will feature live music including Sani and Kalevauva featuring Waltteri Torikka, among others, and interviews with well-known hockey personalities. Finland’s ice hockey team will also go on stage to greet the crowd. The city welcomes everyone to celebrate the homecoming of ice hockey.

Traffic in the city center will be affected by the event and its arrangements. The pedestrian pavement between Aleksis Kiven katu and Satakunta bridge will be closed from approximately 8 am to 10 pm. Aleksis Kiven katu will also be closed from approximately 4:15 pm to 6:30 pm. The closure starts from the office building, Virastotalo. There will also be some changes to the lanes of Satakunnankatu.

Parking in the Frenckell square parking lot will be prohibited from approximately 8 am to 6:30 pm. The Frenckel car park will be closed from approximately 4:15 pm to 6:30 pm. The bus stop at Frenckell square in Satakunnankatu will be taken out of service from 8:00 am and will return to service once the event area has been cleared.

In Puutarhakatu, the pedestrian and cyclist lane on the east side of Aleksis Kiven katu will be closed and the taxi rank in the same location will be closed from 4:15 pm to 6:30 pm. Traffic will be directed by authorities on the day of the event.

Thousands of people are expected to participate in the celebrations, so we recommend that you arrive to the venue on foot or by public transport.

Home of hockey activity zone open to all ages

During the World Championship, there will be a free-of-charge activity zone in the city center. The activity zone is located between Kesäkeidas Summer Terrace Restaurants and Frenckell square. The area includes various activity sites, YLE broadcasting center and a screen showing all the world championship games played in Tampere. The activity zone is run by local ice hockey clubs, the Finnish Ice Hockey Association and the Evangelical Lutheran Parish of Tampere. The Home of Hockey activity zone is substance-free and welcomes the whole family.

On the game days from May 13 to 29, the Home of Hockey activity zone opens about 1h 20 min before the first game starts and closes after the last game of the day. The activity zone can be visited from the opening of the zone until the beginning of the last game of the day. The zone will be closed on 25 May and 27 May when no games take place.

Due to the activity zone and the Home of Hockey celebrations, the Molin parking lot will be closed from 7 am on 10 May until the end of the championship. The parking lot will be available again after the games on 31 May.
