Hands-on Indian Ocean street food cooking class. Learn to make Réunion-style samosas, Bobotie beef samosas and Mauritian fish vindaye in a relaxed small-group class.
Join The Intercultural Kitchen for a hands-on Indian Ocean Street Food cooking class in our home kitchen in central Tampere (5-minutes walk from the railway station).
In this small-group class, we’ll explore some of the diverse flavours and food cultures connected by the Indian Ocean. You’ll cook alongside two instructors and prepare three distinctive dishes from scratch.
What you will make:
- Réunion Cheese & Potato Samosas – Crispy pastries filled with a comforting cheese and potato mixture.
- Bobotie Beef Samosas – Our samosa interpretation of South African bobotie, combining warmly spiced beef with crisp pastry.
- Mauritian Fish Vindaye – A vibrant turmeric and mustard-infused pickled fish dish traditionally served with bread.
Along the way, you’ll learn practical techniques for preparing samosa fillings, folding and cooking crisp samosas, balancing spices and acidity, and creating the distinctive flavours of vindaye. We’ll also explore some of the cultural connections and stories behind the dishes.
The class is relaxed, practical and suitable for beginners as well as more experienced home cooks. Groups are kept very small and there are two instructors, so everyone receives plenty of individual guidance.
Vegetarian option: The class can be made completely vegetarian by preparing vegetarian Bobotie samosas and Aubergine Vindaye instead. Please let us know when booking if you would like the vegetarian option.
The class is taught in English and takes place in our home kitchen in central Tampere. All ingredients and equipment are provided.
The cost of the cooking class is 44 €. Advance booking is required. Places are limited.
