22.8.–15.9.2026 at the Mältinrannan Art Center Studio: Timo Bredenberg - You Saw Nothing

The Mältinrannan Art Center Studio will exhibit two separate but thematically intertwined works by Timo Bredenberg. In his works, Bredenberg observes the effects of generative artificial intelligence on the transmission and preservation of human knowledge. In connection with the exhibition, Bredenberg will publish an article on his website that discusses the work on the work You Saw Nothing and the resulting observations on the use of generative artificial intelligence and large language models as artistic tools.

Timo Bredenberg is a media artist from Tampere. He works with moving images, software and text art. Bredenberg's works have been seen at international short film festivals, galleries and museums. The Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Finnish Agency for Arts and Culture have supported Bredenberg's artistic work on the works.

The starting point of the video work, created using large language models and generative artificial intelligence, was the dialogues written by Marguerite Duras "You saw nothing in the hospital in Hiroshima" from the film "Hiroshima, my love" (1959) and their recontextualization. The moving image work, which imitates the visuals of the French New Wave, is a synthesis of historical facts, film dialogue and texts written with the help of language models. The central theme of the work is the prerequisites of seeing and experiencing in a world mediated by synthetic media.

"Nothing remained except the two concrete pillars flanking the entrance." ink on paper with a pen, 44 x 35 cm (framed) The semantic maps of the text work, created with a pen on translucent paper, illustrate the ways in which the language model forms connections between different words. The text material used in the work is the account of surgeon Kaoru Shima of the days in Hiroshima in the days after the bombing by the United States, published in the magazine American Surgeon in 1958. The work uses programmatic methods developed for data visualization of language models, which reduce huge multidimensional spaces of meaning to two- or three-dimensional representations.

I have chosen one sentence from the text "Nothing remained except the two concrete pillars flanking the entrance.", which is also the title of my work. I am interested in whether the meanings created by humans can survive in language models.
