Volunteer work for biodiversity in Lempäälä on Lake Ahtialanjärvi

29.8.2026

The volunteers maintain important shorebird habitat by transporting vegetation away from the interior of the island by sledge. The work is physically demanding, but a larger group can achieve more!

Lake Ahtialanjärvi in Lempäälä and the approximately two-hectare Lokkisaari located on it are known nationwide, especially for its diverse migratory wading bird species and exceptionally abundant pochard population. The thriving breeding and migratory bird population is thanks to continuous and determined restoration and maintenance work.

Since 2003, Lokkisaari has been mowed with scythes at least once a year during July and August. In addition, open silt areas have been created in areas occupied by the invasive reed sweetgrass, killing them with permanent covers. The combined effect of these measures has made Lokkisaari the most interesting shorebird destination in the inland in terms of its diversity.

Now you have the opportunity to join in this important restoration work when we organize volunteer work in Lokkisaari on Saturday 29 August at 10 am in cooperation with Luontoliiton Hämeen piiri. The day lasts about 6 hours. The work involves transporting vegetation from the interior of the island by sled and moving it to the edges of the island by boat. The work is physically demanding, but a larger group can certainly accomplish more.

Equipment: it is recommended to wear wading boots, as the soil on the island is watery soft and sinks. Long rubber boots may also be fine, but in wetter areas you may sink up to your knees. Good work gloves are necessary. There is a chance of getting wet, so bring a change of clothes.

Food is offered at the campfire site on the island, but it is still worth bringing your own snacks. You must bring plenty of drinking water.

The work is covered by accident insurance.

The work is organized in all weathers. If the worst thunderstorm is about to strike, then the backup date is Sunday 30.8.

So if you are interested in concrete work to maintain the best shorebird site in the inland and you are capable of doing physical work, you are warmly welcome to join!
