Gallery Week: Concert, TampereRaw - Crossroads

TampereRaw's concert Risteyksiaja / Crossings features new music from four different continents. The concert combines science and art, as the Research Association Suoni ry. and TampereRaw join forces. The concert program has been selected in connection with the doctoral research of the band's clarinetist Reetta Näätänen: it is intended to bring decolonizing perspectives to the performance of Western art music. For example, Brazil, Tanzania and India are not traditionally considered significant birthplaces of Western contemporary music, but the presentations included in the concert will explore why it is important to perform works by composers other than the so-called Western ones.

The concert program consists of two premieres: Brazilian Marcelo Chacur Politano's work Suspender o Céu is inspired by the worldview of the Brazilian indigenous people, in which people hold up the sky. Crossings by Eetu Lehtonen from Nokia once again takes you on a journey to famous Japanese crossroads, the atmosphere and soundscapes of which are conveyed throughout the work. In addition, the concert will feature the duo Nadiya by Indian-American Reena Esmail. It signifies the merging rivers, which are depicted by two Hindustani raagas. Tanzanian Kaghondi wamwa Mwanga's A Nightmare for solo bassoon and flute is based on the music of the Tanzanian Arimi people. Berlin-based Juha T. Koskinen's solo clarinet work Dream Transmission gets a new look, as the Buddhist elements of the work have been adapted in connection with Reetta Näätänen's doctoral research.
