Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra: New World
Praised for his golden tone, Paul Huang dazzles in Korngold’s Violin Concerto, with echoes of classic cinema. The evening culminates in Dvořák’s beloved Ninth Symphony, the New World.
Matthew Halls, conductor
Paul Huang, violin
John Adams: The Chairman Dances
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Violin Concerto
Antonin Dvořák: Symphony No. 9, “New World”
Echoes of history, dreams, and cinematic glamour resonate through the concert’s music. John Adams’s hit piece The Chairman Dances whisks the listener onto an absurd dance floor, where Mao and Nixon meet in a surreal foxtrot. Korngold’s cinematic Violin Concerto brings the golden age of Hollywood to the stage – composed by a two-time Oscar winner who later turned to concert music. The evening culminates in Dvořák’s beloved Symphony No. 9, New World, in which the European composer interprets the American landscape – the whisper of the prairies, the songs of Indigenous peoples, and the pulse of great cities – in an unforgettable way.
