VIRTA - current, stream
23.12.2024
16.00 - 00.00
The window of the turbine hall of Tammerkoski hydroelectric plant
The light installation VIRTA reflects on the concept of stream as both a physical movement and a philosophical stream of life, revealing to the viewer an industrial space used for the production of electric current. Implemented by Larsen/Myllyoja.
VIRTA - current, stream
The concept of current or stream is not only a physical form of movement but also a philosophical phenomenon that represents a continuous journey through life's experiences. When producing electricity, hydropower is a sustainable source of energy that utilizes the natural flow of water and produces clean electricity. The stream of life metaphor is about accepting the natural rhythm of life with its ups and downs and finding balance in the constantly changing circumstances.
VIRTA is a site-specific light art installation where an historical industrial space is revealed to the viewer through the window. The red brick power plant was completed in 1932, and its simplified functionalism facades were designed by city architect Bertel Strömmer.
Light installation is part of the Tampere Festival of Light 2024 and the Ruudun takaa / Window walkabout art event in Pirkanmaa.
Design and implementation of the work:
Annukka Larsen ja Heini Myllyoja, WSP Design Studio
Partners: Mixa Oy, Nekapaino Oy
=====
Window Walkabout is the largest art event ever in the Tampere Region (a.k.a. Pirkanmaa), where windows filled with light and art serve as stages.
