Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra: Luonnotar and The Sea
A symphonic wave, Kalevala’s creation tale and an elegy for the World War’s victims. The composers’ most original masterpieces explore the depths of human life under the direction of Matthew Halls.
Matthew Halls, conductor
Tuuli Takala, soprano
Claude Debussy: La Mer (The Sea)
Jean Sibelius: Luonnotar
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 3, “Pastoral”
Chief conductor Matthew Halls leads three works where humanity, nature, and human character resonate in harmony. Claude Debussy reached an international peak with La Mer, a vivid orchestral vision that sweeps the listener away like a tidal wave. The devastation of the First World War left permanent scars on Ralph Vaughan Williams’ soul. In response, he created the Pastoral Symphony, proclaiming eternal peace with timeless beauty.
