Tango–Guitar–Flamenco Week: Patrik Kleemola (FIN), classical guitar

Finnish guitarist Patrik Kleemola brings Spanish guitar classics into fresh focus by performing them on period instruments (Lacote 1839, Romanillos 1979). The programme opens a window onto the guitar’s own history: its colours, resonance and expressive possibilities as they were heard in different eras of Spanish and European musical life.

Renowned as a soloist and chamber musician, Kleemola performs worldwide and stands out as one of Northern Europe’s premier classical guitarists, dedicated to both historical repertoire and contemporary music. His work with early 19th-century guitar music, especially the world of Fernando Sor, has led him to original-source research and international scholarly collaboration. At the same time, his long collaboration with living composers has expanded the guitar repertoire by dozens of new works.

In this recital, familiar Spanish classics are not treated as museum pieces, but as living music shaped by the sound of the instruments themselves. The result is both intimate and illuminating: a chance to hear beloved repertoire with the clarity, warmth and immediacy that period guitars can reveal.
