I have placed myself on display—stepped in front of the camera and photographed.
Then I have painted.
My work is rooted in bringing invisible thoughts and emotions into view through painting. I explore themes such as seeing and being seen, (inner) conflict, shame, and questions of existence. Through my artistic practice, I engage with different aspects of being human, seeking to understand them and, at the same time, myself. An essential part of my process is translating bodily experience onto the surface of the painting.
Tuulia Iso-Tryykäri (b. 1985) lives and works in Lappeenranta. Her primary medium is oil painting on canvas. She has long been drawn to figurative expression, as well as to the way painting can evoke something real
and recognizable from something highly abstract—such as individual brushstrokes or subtle shifts in color.
Iso-Tryykäri graduated as a visual artist from Saimaa University of Applied Sciences in 2009 and completed her Master’s degree in 2013. She has held several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group and collaborative exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Her works are included in the collections of the Finnish State and the art museums of Lappeenranta, Tampere, Kuopio, and Kouvola.
