A Navy SEAL veteran returns from Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and deep depression. As typical treatments fail, he finds hope in psychedelics.
Highly decorated Navy SEAL Marcus Capone returns from Afghanistan and attempts to readjust to civilian life. But years of unprecedented warfare have left Marcus with treatment-defiant PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and severe depression beyond what current government treatment options can effectively address.
Fearing for Marcus’ life, his wife, Amber, finds hope in a groundbreaking therapy combining two powerful psychedelics – ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT –, unapproved for use in the U.S., but with seemingly limitless applications. Inspired by Marcus’ remarkable recovery but still confronted with the alarming rate of veteran suicide in their community, Marcus and Amber embark on a new mission: providing access to this lifeline.
In April, the Association for Finnish Education & Culture (Psykedeelisen sivistyksen liitto ry) will host a screening of In Waves and War (2024) in Turku, Tampere and Helsinki. The movie is an emotional, inspiring odyssey about overcoming the aftereffects of war and rediscovering humanity. In addition to interviews and live footage, the story is also told through powerful animations depicting worlds of traumatic memories and extreme emotions.
Considering recent international tensions, there’s no doubt that questions related to the themes of the documentary have become even more relevant than before. After the screening, we’ll once again have time for an audience discussion where these can be tackled.
The events are free of charge. If you want to make sure you have a spot in one of the screenings, be sure to reserve it well before – it’s possible that we’ll have a full house and cannot therefore guarantee that seats will be available from the door (though you’re welcome to try).
The movie is in English, with Finnish subtitles.
The Turku screening takes place on April 7th, the Tampere screening on April 14th, and the Helsinki screening on April 16th.
The schedule in Tampere:
5:30 Doors open
6:00 Opening words and movie (107min)
7:50 Break
8:00 Audience discussion
8:45 End
The Tampere event takes place in Kulttuurikeskus Kaista, Hatanpään Valtatie 34, entrance E, 2nd floor. The venue is wheelchair accessible, though unfortunately a wheelchair-accessible toilet is not available.
Free access, but register your spot in the screening here. Tickets at the door are only available if the show doesn't sell out, so we recommend registering well in advance.
