Tampere biennale: A tree does not sing alone
8.4.2026 - 10.5.2026
09.00 - 18.00
Kulttuuritalo Laikku, Galleria, Keskustori 4, Tampere
Exhibition by Riikka Talvitie, Leevi Räsänen and Teemu Mastovaara.
The theme linking the works in this exhibition is trees: trees as individuals, the myths about them in various cultures, the state of the world’s forests, the political nature of the theme, increasing drought and the planting of trees as a silent act of resistance. Finnish public debate on forests often highlights two opposing views: On the one hand, forests are the foundation of our economic growth, but on the other hand we have chopped down too much of them, turning forests from carbon sinks into emission sources in addition to our other climate emissions.
The purpose of this exhibition at the Tampere Biennale is to broaden the horizons of the forest debate. What if there were no longer a forest but only a single tree? Composers Riikka Talvitie, Leevi Räsänen and Teemu Mastovaara contribute to the exhibition.
Riikka Maria Talvitie is a Finnish composer, pedagogue, Doctor of Music from the University of the Arts Helsinki, and an oboist. Talvitie's output is extensive and diverse, and includes both vocal and instrumental music, including works for her own instrument, the oboe, music with live electronics and radio music, and pedagogical works for children and young people. She has actively collaborated with artists from various fields, such as poets, theater and dance artists.
Cellist and composer Teemu Mastovaara is a music pedagogue and a Master of Music by education. He graduated from the Contemporary Performance and Composition training program, which consisted of a total of four semesters in Tallinn, Stockholm, Lyon and Hamburg. Mastovaara's creative work consists of cello playing, composition, theater productions, recordings, programming and teaching.
Leevi Räsänen is a Master of Music who studied composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow and the Sibelius Academy. Räsänen's work combines an interest in microtonality, working in multidisciplinary working groups, and bringing non-musical phenomena to concert halls. He is interested in mixing different octave divisions and natural tuning, as well as combining acoustic sound with electronics, objects, and other parameters, such as light and movement.
