PROGRAM

Saturday, April 4

12:00–2:00 p.m. – Julmu Instrument-Making Workshop, Lecture Hall

In this workshop, participants will build their own Julmu instrument using natural materials such as wood, birch bark, and cotton string. The Julmu is a small bird whistle that has been used since the Stone Age. No prior technical skills or knowledge are required. The workshop is suitable for adults as well as elementary school-aged children and older. Elementary school-aged children must be accompanied by a parent.

2:30 p.m. – Gilda & Esther Duo, Music Hall

Embark on a musical journey to the early decades of the last century! The Gilda & Esther Duo performs music from the 1920s to the 1950s as well as their own compositions. Gilda plays the piano, and Esther plays the ukulele and a washboard, depending on the situation. The songs are mainly performed as duets. The concert lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Sunday, April 5

1:30–4:00 p.m. – Nature Awakens: Painting with Natural Colors Workshop, Lecture Hall

In this workshop, participants will playfully experiment with painting on watercolor paper using watercolors made from natural materials. Watercolors made from plants produce vibrant and interesting colors, which can be further enhanced by adjusting the pH. The workshop is suitable for everyone and requires no prior skills or knowledge. The workshop is led by artisan and visual artist Saija Lehtonen, who will also explain how you can make your own paints in the future and what makes natural materials and their use so special.

4:30 p.m. – To Freedom – A Concert for Spring and Easter, Music Hall

The concert will feature Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, preceded by Peteris Vasks’s Castillo interior.

Beethoven’s expansive and luminous Violin Concerto enchants with soulful pastoral melodies and contemplative shadows, but also with a strong willpower. The work concludes with an uplifting, universal sense of liberation. Before embarking on this journey with Beethoven, however, the concert opens with “Castillo interior,” a duo for violin and cello by the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. The stripped-down and honest musical language connects to the 16th-century nun Teresa of Ávila’s metaphors of the human soul as a castle with many different “rooms.” In the rooms of composer Vasks’s “inner castle,” we hear vulnerability, weariness, pain, and questions, but ultimately also a deep sense of peace. The concert lasts approximately 55 minutes in total.
