Paintings and an animation by artist Eeva Meltio set in the world of the Comics-Finlandia-winning Hiekka.
The grassy plains of the Midwest of the United States turned into a sandy desert during the 1930s drought known as the Dust Bowl. Eeva Meltio is a Helsinki-based comic artist who has studied the subject extensively while writing the comic novel Hiekka (Sand in English), published in 2024 by Kraft Ink. Sand tells the story of a young Olive, or Ollie, who, like many others of her time, ends up in the oil fields to cultivate black gold. The novel was awarded by Comics-Finlandia Prize in 2025.
The Clouds Hanging Low exhibition, which is set in the world of the comic novel Hiekka, features oil paintings by Eeva Meltio and the cartoon animation The Rig. They show a plain that has been taken over by humans, modified according to human needs and then left to the mercy of the wind.
