In 1869, the Austrian economist Emanuel Herrmann wrote an article in a newspaper in which he pointed out that the time and effort required to write a letter were disproportionate to the size of the message being sent. He suggested a more practical and cheaper method of producing shorter and more effective messages.
The Austro-Hungarian Post Office was impressed and introduced the Correspondenz-Karte. The light brown 8.5 x 12 cm rectangle had space for the address on the front and a short message on the back. The postcard had a 2 Kreuzer stamp printed in the upper right corner and cost half the price of a regular letter.
Thus the postcard was born and the first one was sent on October 1, 1869. When 2019 marked 150 years since this, Postcrossing (the postcard hobby) organized a global campaign to celebrate this special occasion. Since then, World Postcard Day, or WPD, has been celebrated on October 1st.
